Lively and precise, this expression shows vivid red cherry, pepper, alpine herbs, green olive, and a hint of rosehip tea. Just under medium-bodied, it’s shaped by firm, silty tannins with a faint nutty creaminess beneath its taut frame. Sleek and long, with crisp drive and a leaner fruit profile, it delivers a finely structured, elegant take on a lighter red.
From Oscar Hermann's Saint Andrews Vineyard in the Upper Yarra, located in the Shire of Nillumbik. Planted in 1995, 14 acres with a mix of varieties on clay & duplex soils with some quartz scattered through parts. Farmed organically, though not certified.
"In a year when there was enough rain pressure through the growing season - once April started the rain didn't seem to stop. This forced us in a position where we had to pick nebbiolo to a touch over 12 baume. Didn't want to make sparkling nor a rosè. So fermented like a red, alternate plung-downs and pump-overs for close to 3 weeks. After a few conversations with friends I decided to try and extend the post ferment maceration significantly. This was spurred on from some reading around the wines of Valtellina. This method transformed it from tannic flavoured juice to a fresh, supple & bright wine with structure and acid. All old puncheons for a touch over 12 months. Bottled unfined & unfiltered." - Oscar Hermann
