Gut Oggau Joschuari Blaufränkisch 2022

Joschuari is the enigmatic older brother in the Gut Oggau family brooding yet magnetic, elegant with a quiet fire. Made from 100% Blaufränkisch, this is a wine that wears its heart on its sleeve. Deep purple in hue, almost luminous, it draws you in with aromas of ripe blueberry, mulberry, violets, and a swirl of fresh herbs. There’s power here, yes, but also restraint. The tannins are fine-grained and structured like polished stone and the palate hums with energy, soul, and poise.

Grown on 35-year-old vines planted in limestone and shale soils, Joschuari is rooted in the unique terroir of Burgenland. The fruit is carefully harvested by hand, partially destemmed, and then left to macerate on skins for a full seven months. Fermentation is spontaneous with wild yeasts, and ageing takes place over 20 months in large-format oak barrels. No fining, no filtering, and no sulphur just pure, expressive fruit and time-honoured care.

This 2022 vintage is a striking example of what Blaufränkisch can be when left to speak in its own voice intense, spicy, and layered, with a touch of mystery and a lot of charm. Pair it with red meat, earthy vegetables, or simply a long night of conversation.

Gut Oggau, the visionary Austrian estate behind Joschuari, is the work of Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck. Since 2007, they’ve cultivated a 14-hectare biodynamic vineyard on the edge of Lake Neusiedl in Oggau, Burgenland. Restoring a neglected 17th-century winery, the pair gave new life to old vines untouched by chemicals for over two decades. Their wines are natural, Demeter-certified, and made with minimal intervention—each one a vivid character in a fictional "family" of soulful, story-driven wines.
