Winemakers Notes:  Lagrein is a red wine grape variety native to the valleys of South Tyrol, Italy’s northern most Provence.  It is thought to be a descendant of Teroldego, and related to Syrah, Pinot noir and Dureza.  Chosen from a vineyard near Bordertown in the Limestone Coast called Werriga Vineyard.  The grapes were transported to Woodside where it was destemmed and lightly crushed into 1 tonne open fermenter where fermentation was conducted over 10 days with hand plunging 3 times daily.  Prior to completion of fermentation half was pressed off skins into oak to retain fresh fruit and aromatics while the second half was sealed in tank to undertake a post fermentation maceration on skins: a process that softens the middle pallet and builds colour and intense varietal flavours.  The second parcel was sealed in tank under a cover of Co2 for 65 days this was then basket pressed into seasoned French oak for 12 months.  After this it was carefully racked and bottled without any finning and filtration with no additions except for minimal preservatives.
